Bujanda

History

A very ancient village. It appears in several documents under the name of Buszanda in 1071 and as Buxanda in the Cuaderno de Ordenanzas de Álava, 1742.
It is well known in mainland Spain because in its parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady, the incorrupt body of Our Lady lies the incorrupt body of San Fausto Labrador, considered the patron saint of fertility. His relics have been venerated by illustrious figures, including the queens María Isabel de Braganza, María Luisa de Braganza, María Luisa of Parma and Isabella II.

The Village

Bujanda is located at the confluence of the river Izki and the ravine of La Parra, between the mountains of La Muela, La Peña del Castillo and Soila.
Its houses are scattered around the hillside, sheltered by the church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, next to which stands the church of the Assumption of Our Lady, next to which is the children’s playground.
Its historical past can be seen in the emblazoned houses, which have coats of arms such as those of the Sagasti and Arrietas and Castillos families.
